Love Vinted? So Do We, But This Is Why We'd Never Buy Second-Hand Shoes

If your Vinted app is full of bundle alerts and "offer accepted" notifications, you're in very good company. It's become one of the easiest ways to dress our fast-growing children without spending a fortune, and we're genuinely all for it. Buying preloved keeps these lovely clothes in circulation while they've still got plenty of wear left, saves you money and is so much kinder to the planet than buying everything new. What's not to love?

But while second-hand clothes can be a win all round, shoes are a different story. As tempting as it is to add that barely-worn pair to your basket, a child's shoes really are one item worth buying new and having fitted. Here's why...

Shoes Shape Themselves to the First Wearer

Shoes, especially those made from natural materials like leather or cotton, start to mould to the shape of the foot almost immediately. You'll often see an imprint forming on the insole after just a few wears.

So however pristine that Vinted bargain looks in the photos, it has already taken on the shape of the child who wore it first. When another child slips their foot inside, their foot will try to adapt to that existing imprint. This can affect how they place their feet, how they walk and even how their body moves overall.

Wear Patterns Can Throw the Body Out of Balance

Every child walks and moves in their own unique way. Over time, their shoes develop their unique wear pattern on the soles, especially around the heel and toe.

This is almost impossible to judge from a listing. A pair can look "barely worn" and still carry the impression of someone else's walking pattern on the soles. When a new child inherits that pair, this wear can influence their movement, posture and alignment.

The Hidden Hygiene Factor

Each little foot has around 250,000 sweat glands, one of the highest concentrations of sweat glands anywhere on the body. Children's feet tend to sweat proportionally more than adults', partly because their sweat glands are still maturing and their busy little bodies run warm.

Leather helps draw that moisture away and regulate temperature, which is great, but over time it also means the inside of the shoe gradually breaks down, and the warm, dark, slightly damp space inside a worn shoe is exactly the environment that fungi and bacteria love. With a Vinted purchase you've no way of knowing how long or how hard a shoe has been worn before it reached you, or what it might be lurking inside.

Used footwear is a recognised way of passing on athlete's foot (a fungal infection that thrives inside warm, sweaty shoes) and the fungi can linger deep in the shoe's materials even when it looks perfectly clean. The same goes for verrucae (those stubborn little plantar warts), which are far more common in children than adults and can be picked up from shared shoes. NHS guidance on verrucae is refreshingly clear on this point: don't share shoes or socks. A quick wipe-down sadly can't undo any of this.

And let's be honest... even setting the science aside, no one really wants to put their child's foot into someone else's old sweat 🤢

Every Pair of Feet Is Unique

Even among siblings, foot shape can vary hugely: length, width, instep height, heel and ankle shape... the list goes on.

When we fit shoes, we assess all of these things to find the right pair for each child's specific shape and needs. A photo and a size label simply can't tell you any of that. The chances of a random pair fitting your child just as well as one that's been properly fitted just for them? Pretty slim.

Growing Feet Need Extra Care

Children's feet have soft, flexible bones that don't fully harden until their teenage years. During this time they're especially vulnerable to pressure and restriction, particularly around the toes and over the instep.

Shoes that don't match a child's foot shape, or that put pressure on the wrong areas, can lead to long-term issues such as poor posture, discomfort or even permanent changes to the way the foot develops. That's why a well-fitting pair, chosen specifically for their stage of development, really is one of the best investments you can make in their future foot health.

So What Can You Do With Outgrown Shoes?

We completely understand the instinct to sell or buy preloved, it comes from a good place: reducing waste, saving money, helping where we can. And we believe in that too.

So if your child's shoes are still in decent condition, rather than passing them straight to another little pair of feet, consider donating them to an organisation that makes sure they're reused in the best way. Charities like Sal's Shoes, Little Village and Shoe Aid collect preloved shoes and carefully match them to children in need, where a good pair of shoes is a luxury, not a given. While those shoes might not be ideal for a developing foot, they can still offer essential protection and comfort to a child who truly needs them.

From the Ground Up

We know there's a lot of factors to consider, especially when little feet are growing so fast and how easy it is to grab a bargain with a couple of taps. But finding the right shoes at the right time really can make a lasting difference. Supporting your child's natural development, movement and confidence starts from the ground up, quite literally!

So keep filling your Vinted basket with all the gorgeous preloved clothes, but when it comes to shoes, let those little feet have a pair that's truly their own.

If you'd appreciate personal advice or want to be sure your child's shoes are perfectly suited to them, we're here to help. And if you've got outgrown pairs to pass on, donating them to a shoe charity is a wonderful way to give those shoes a second life and another child a step in the right direction.
